Writing & Docsby anthropics
2/3 audits passSource-available (not open source)
Use this skill whenever the user wants to create, read, edit, or manipulate Word documents (.docx files) or Word templates (.dotx files).
DOCX, published by anthropics in the skills repository, teaches an agent to create, read and edit Word documents. It picks an approach by task: write a docx (npm) script to create a new document, unzip and edit word/document.xml to change an existing one, and use pandoc to read content. It lists the docx-js pitfalls that break output, such as A4 as the default page size, dual table widths in DXA, ShadingType.CLEAR instead of SOLID, bullet numbering configs instead of literal bullets, and built-in heading levels for a table of contents.
For editing it strips symlinks from untrusted files, merges fragmented runs so text is findable, validates against the XSD schemas, checks that redlines are tracked under the right author, and explains the quirks of accepting tracked changes. A comment helper writes the six cross-linked files Word comments need, and every document is rendered to images through LibreOffice so the agent can look at the result. It needs docx, pandoc, LibreOffice and Poppler.
DOCX is listed for reference. It is source-available under Anthropic's proprietary terms and runs inside Claude's own apps and Claude Code; it cannot be imported into BusinessMCP because its licence forbids copying.
What you can do with it
- Generate a formatted Word report with tables and a table of contents
- Redline a contract with tracked changes under a named author
- Add threaded comments to an existing .docx
- Convert a legacy .doc and read it as markdown
Run it on your business data
DOCX’s licence forbids copying, so it can’t be imported — install it in Claude directly.

Frequently asked questions
How do I install DOCX?
Run `npx skills add anthropics/skills --skill docx` to add it to a Claude Code or other skills-compatible agent.
Can I import DOCX into BusinessMCP?
No. It is published under Anthropic's source-available proprietary terms, which forbid copying, so it is listed for reference and runs inside Claude's own apps and Claude Code.
How does it check its own output?
It renders the document to PDF with LibreOffice, converts pages to images with pdftoppm and has the agent look at them, and validates edited files against the XSD schemas.
