The PostHog alternative for the marketing site, not the product

The full picture

PostHog is a product-analytics platform: event pipelines, user-cohort funnels, feature flags, session replay, surveys, error tracking and a data warehouse, all usage-based with generous free allowances — 1 million events, 5,000 web recordings and 1 million flag requests a month before anything is billed. It also ships an official MCP server, so an AI can query it. If what you measure is a logged-in product, PostHog is excellent and this page is not trying to talk you out of it.

BusinessMCP is the other half of the stack. It measures the marketing website and the business behind it: cookieless first-party analytics, the company behind anonymous B2B visits, six attribution models, Stripe revenue, a CRM and an AI business analyst — at flat monthly prices rather than a per-event meter that scales with how well you instrument. Many teams run both; this page is about which questions belong where.

Why teams switch

Product analytics vs. business analytics

PostHog answers “what did users do inside the app”. BusinessMCP answers “which companies visited, which channel deserves credit, what did it earn” — with the CRM and revenue in the same tool. They are different questions, and a marketing team on PostHog usually ends up building the second set by hand.

Cookieless by default, with the company resolved

PostHog can run in a cookieless mode; its default identifies users with a persistent ID for cohorts and flags. BusinessMCP sets no cookie, keeps company-level rather than personal profiles, and resolves the account behind B2B traffic on Starter ($19/mo).

A flat price you can predict

PostHog meters events after the first million (about $0.00005 per anonymous event in the next tier, more for identified events), replays after 5,000, flags after a million, plus $250–$750 a month platform add-ons for SSO, RBAC and support. BusinessMCP is $0, $19, $79, $199 or $499 a month by unique visitors.

Attribution and revenue built in

PostHog reports UTMs and channel types; multi-touch marketing attribution and ad-spend ROAS are not what it is for. BusinessMCP computes six attribution models over every session, joins ad spend by campaign, and ties Stripe revenue to the visit that earned it.

PostHog pricing, broken down

PostHog per-unit rates are from two 2026 teardowns of the official pricing calculator; the free allowances are from posthog.com/pricing directly. Usage pricing changes often — check the calculator before budgeting.

Where BusinessMCP is NOT the right choice

An alternatives page you can trust has to cut both ways. Honestly:

  • PostHog does product analytics, feature flags, experiments on app events, surveys, error tracking and a warehouse — none of which BusinessMCP does. If your measurement is inside a logged-in product, PostHog is the right tool and we are not a replacement.
  • PostHog’s free allowance (1M events and 5k replays a month) is far larger than BusinessMCP’s free plan (300 unique visitors, no recordings), and PostHog is open source and self-hostable.
  • Google Analytics 4 is free at any traffic volume and ships Explorations plus a BigQuery export. BusinessMCP has no exploration builder and no warehouse export — the Free plan caps at 300 unique visitors a month and there is no Google Ads native linking.
  • If you only want a pageview dashboard, Plausible ($9/mo) and Fathom ($15/mo) are cheaper for pure analytics, and both offer a public shareable stats page that BusinessMCP does not have.
  • Raw events are retained for up to 13 months (sessions and daily rollups are kept for the life of the account). Plausible advertises three-to-five-year retention on paid plans and a self-hosted Matomo keeps whatever you keep.

Frequently asked questions

Is BusinessMCP a PostHog replacement?

For marketing-site analytics, attribution, visitor identification and CRM, yes. For product analytics — feature flags, cohort funnels, experiments on app events, error tracking, a warehouse — no. Most teams that use both keep PostHog on the product and BusinessMCP on the website and pipeline.

Which is cheaper?

At low volume PostHog is free and extremely generous (1M events a month). BusinessMCP’s free plan stops at 300 unique visitors. Above the allowances PostHog bills per event, recording and flag request plus optional $250–$750 platform add-ons, while BusinessMCP is a flat $19–$499 by visitors — so the answer depends on how heavily you instrument.

Can an AI query both?

Yes. PostHog ships an official MCP server, and BusinessMCP exposes its analytics, CRM, revenue and connected tools through an MCP endpoint with scoped Bearer keys. The difference is that BusinessMCP also ships its own AI business analyst inside the dashboard, with 30 runs a month on the free plan.

Does BusinessMCP have session replay like PostHog?

Yes, from the Growth plan ($79/mo): rrweb replay with heatmaps, rage- and dead-click detection and an AI read-out, with 7-day retention (30 days on Scale, unlimited on Business). PostHog’s 5,000 free web recordings a month is the more generous starting point.

How to migrate

  1. 1

Keep PostHog on the product. Add the BusinessMCP snippet to the marketing site — one script tag — and let both run.

  2. 2

Point sign-up and checkout goals at BusinessMCP with a lead or conversion role so the marketing funnel and Stripe revenue reconcile there.

  3. 3

Use BusinessMCP’s Events API to send server-side events (identify, group) from your backend where the browser script cannot see them.

  4. 4

Ask the AI business analyst the marketing questions and PostHog the product ones; both expose an MCP server, so one Claude session can read both.
