Matomo: free On-Premise; Cloud from about €23–29/mo for 50k hits · BusinessMCP: free to 300 visitors/mo, then $19–$499/mo
Switching gets you
A hosted, cookieless-by-default analytics stack that identifies the visiting company, credits six attribution models, and is queryable by an AI business analyst or your own Claude/ChatGPT over MCP.
Stay with Matomo if
Data residency means “on our own server”, you need its plugin ecosystem, or your traffic is measured in millions of hits and a self-hosted box is cheaper.

The full picture

Matomo is the open-source Google Analytics: a GPL codebase you can run yourself for a $0 licence with unlimited users and hits, or Matomo Cloud hosted in Frankfurt with a 21-day trial. It is deep — segments, funnels, multi-channel attribution, heatmaps and session recording as paid plugins — and it is the default answer wherever “on our own infrastructure” is a hard requirement.

The trade is operational: a self-hosted Matomo is a PHP application and a database you patch, back up and scale, and Cloud is priced by hits, which count every event and download as well as pageviews. BusinessMCP is hosted, cookieless by default rather than by configuration, resolves the company behind B2B visits, computes six attribution models at query time, and exposes all of it to an AI business analyst and to your own Claude or ChatGPT over MCP. The free plan covers 300 unique visitors a month.

Why teams switch

Hosted vs. a server you own

Matomo’s free licence is real, and so is the ops bill: upgrades, backups, database growth and the premium plugins that make it GA-class. BusinessMCP is a hosted product on a month-to-month plan, with the raw firehose on a managed columnar store you never see.

Cookieless by default, not by configuration

Matomo can run cookieless, and it can also run with cookies and a consent flow — it depends on how you configure it. BusinessMCP sets no cookie in any mode; identification is company-level under legitimate interest, and consent gating is a switch you add only if your own posture needs it.

Hits vs. visitors

Matomo Cloud meters hits — a pageview, an event, a download, an outbound click each count — so a modestly instrumented site burns through a 50,000-hit tier well before 50,000 pageviews. BusinessMCP prices on unique visitors, with events as a generous secondary cap.

Who visited, asked in plain English

Matomo has no company identification and no AI layer. BusinessMCP resolves the account behind anonymous B2B visits on Starter ($19/mo), keeps a CRM in the same product, and ships an AI business analyst plus an MCP endpoint so the question “which companies looked at pricing this week” is a sentence, not a segment.

Matomo pricing, broken down

Matomo Cloud prices are rendered by a slider and are quoted here from two 2026 teardowns; the official page lists the hit tiers (50k to 5M) and On-Premise bundle prices, which we verified directly.

Where BusinessMCP is NOT the right choice

An alternatives page you can trust has to cut both ways. Honestly:

  • Matomo runs on your own server for a $0 licence with unlimited hits and users, and has a mature plugin ecosystem (heatmaps, session recording, A/B tests, form analytics). BusinessMCP is hosted only and has no plugin marketplace.
  • Google Analytics 4 is free at any traffic volume and ships Explorations plus a BigQuery export. BusinessMCP has no exploration builder and no warehouse export — the Free plan caps at 300 unique visitors a month and there is no Google Ads native linking.
  • If you only want a pageview dashboard, Plausible ($9/mo) and Fathom ($15/mo) are cheaper for pure analytics, and both offer a public shareable stats page that BusinessMCP does not have.
  • Raw events are retained for up to 13 months (sessions and daily rollups are kept for the life of the account). Plausible advertises three-to-five-year retention on paid plans and a self-hosted Matomo keeps whatever you keep.
  • Product-analytics features — feature flags, user-cohort funnels, experiments on app events, error tracking — belong to PostHog or Mixpanel. BusinessMCP measures websites and the business behind them, not in-app product usage.

Frequently asked questions

Is Matomo really free?

The On-Premise Community Edition is free under the GPL with unlimited users and hits. You pay for the server, the upkeep and any premium plugins — heatmaps, session recording and the attribution plugin are paid. Matomo Cloud is priced by hits, from roughly €23–29 a month for 50,000.

Is BusinessMCP cookieless like Matomo’s cookieless mode?

BusinessMCP is cookieless in every mode; there is no cookie setting to get wrong. Matomo can be configured cookieless, but the default install uses first-party cookies and a consent flow if you enable one.

Does BusinessMCP have session recording and heatmaps like Matomo’s plugins?

Yes, from the Growth plan ($79/mo) with 7-day retention, 30 days on Scale and unlimited on Business — recorded by the same script as analytics, with rage- and dead-click detection. Matomo sells these as paid plugins on-premise (around €149–199 a year each per published teardowns) or as Cloud add-ons.

Can I self-host BusinessMCP?

No. If self-hosting is the requirement, Matomo or Umami are the honest recommendations; BusinessMCP is hosted only.

Other honest alternatives

Umami

MIT-licensed and lighter than Matomo to self-host; Cloud Hobby plan is free to 100k events.

PostHog

How to migrate

  1. 1

Install the BusinessMCP snippet beside Matomo’s tracker; both are one script tag.

  2. 2

Map Matomo goals and events to BusinessMCP goals with a lead or conversion role, and connect Stripe for revenue.

  3. 3

Export Matomo reports you want to keep as CSV; BusinessMCP keeps sessions for the life of the account, from install day.

  4. 4

If a policy requires self-hosting, keep Matomo for that property and use BusinessMCP where identification and the AI business analyst pay off.
