Frequently asked questions
Where does this company data come from?
From BusinessMCP’s global company database — about 34M companies compiled from public company registries, open company datasets, public business listings and company websites. It contains business facts only: no personal data, no emails, no reviews.
Why wasn’t my domain found?
Because it isn’t in our store yet, and we don’t invent a record to fill the gap. A miss here is also a miss on the company API, which is why the API charges nothing when it finds nothing.
Can I look up companies in bulk?
The free tool is limited to 15 lookups an hour. For lists, use the company API: one call takes up to 100 domains, you pay credits only for the companies it finds, and the first 1,000 credits every month are free. To enrich every company that visits your own website automatically, that’s the BusinessMCP platform.
Is there an API or MCP tool for this?
Yes. The same lookup is GET /api/hub/v1/companies/{domain} on the BusinessMCP Data API, and the company_lookup tool on its MCP server, so an AI agent in Claude, Cursor or ChatGPT can call it directly. The API also returns the company phone number and whether its website is still online.
Is this legal under GDPR?
Yes. Firmographic data — what a company is called, its industry, its size — is information about a legal entity, not a person. GDPR protects personal data; company facts published in registries and on company websites are business information.
