BusinessMCP

The IPinfo alternative when the question is which company, not where

IPinfo is the geolocation and network-data specialist. BusinessMCP’s Data API answers a narrower question: is this IP a company, and which one?

The full picture

IPinfo is the reference IP-data API: geolocation down to city, ASN ownership and type, privacy detection for VPNs, proxies, Tor and relays, carrier data and downloadable databases. Its pricing page on 28 September 2026 showed a free Lite tier (unlimited country-level lookups plus ASN name and domain), Core at $26/month ($310/year) for 150,000 requests with city geolocation and privacy detection, Max at $163/month ($1,960/year) for 250,000 requests adding carrier, residential-proxy detection and places, and a custom Enterprise tier. In that plan comparison the Company field — name, domain, route and type — carries a tick only under Enterprise; IPinfo’s product page describes company data as a business and custom-plan feature. Either way, it is not in the self-serve price.

BusinessMCP’s Data API does one part of that job. ip_lookup resolves an address against an IP graph we build ourselves every night from public registry, routing and DNS evidence, and returns a verdict (company, non_business, low_confidence or unidentified), the network class, the company name and domain only when the verdict is company, the country, ASN and matched network, and flags for hosting, CDN edges and secure-egress ranges. It costs 1 credit per IP, whatever the answer, on the same key as company lookup and email checks.

The verdict is deliberately conservative. Most people now browse from home ISP and mobile lines that name no company, so those return non_business — the correct answer, not a miss. A SASE or secure-egress range belongs to that vendor’s customers, so we flag it and decline to name anyone. If you need to know where an IP is, use IPinfo. If you need to know whether it is a business worth attributing, that is what this was built for.

Why teams switch

Company answers without an Enterprise contract

On IPinfo’s pricing page the Company field sits in the Enterprise column. On the Data API it is the core answer from the first call: 1,000 free credits a month, then $2.00 per 1,000, 1 credit per IP.

A verdict that refuses to guess

Trust company.domain only when the verdict is company — and we only return it then. Carrier and mobile ranges, cloud and CDN-edge space and SASE egress are classified and flagged rather than attributed to whoever holds the registry record, which is the mistake that turns a Comcast subscriber into “Comcast” in a B2B report.

Firmographics on the same key

Once an IP resolves to a domain, company_lookup returns the industry, size, location, phone and LinkedIn for it, and email_pattern returns the address format — the next two calls a B2B team makes, without a second vendor.

Built for agents as well as code

Every tool is also an MCP tool at /api/hub/mcp with the same price and typed errors. IPinfo’s official MCP server is good for geolocation and network questions; ours answers the company question and the follow-ups in one session.

IPinfo prices and the per-tier feature table are from ipinfo.io/pricing on 2026-09-28. Some 2026 third-party write-ups still quote older IPinfo tier names and prices; we used the live page. BusinessMCP: the first 1,000 first-party credits each month are free; after that credits are billed in arrears at $2.00 per 1,000 for the first 100,000, falling to $0.80 per 1,000 above a million. New paying accounts start with a 50,000-credit monthly cap you can change. Prices come from the same file the charge path reads.

Where BusinessMCP is NOT the right choice

An alternatives page you can trust has to cut both ways. Honestly:

  • Country is the only location field we return — no city, region, postal code, coordinates or timezone. For geolocation, IPinfo (even its free Lite tier at country level) is the better tool.
  • No carrier name, no per-IP residential-proxy detection, no IP whois and no downloadable database: every answer is an API call against our graph, and bulk is 100 IPs per call.
  • We name far fewer IPs than a feed that labels every range with its registry holder. Home ISP and mobile lines, cloud, CDN edges and SASE egress return non_business or unidentified on purpose, and each lookup costs a credit whatever the verdict.
  • The graph is rebuilt nightly, so a range that changed hands today can be a day behind, and we publish no uptime or latency figures for the Data API.
  • The Data API is a young product from a small company. You get published per-call prices and direct founder support, not an account team, a long track record or an integrations marketplace.

Frequently asked questions

Does IPinfo have an IP to company API?

Yes. IPinfo’s company data returns the company name, domain and type (business, ISP, hosting, government or education). On its pricing page on 28 September 2026 the Company field was listed only under the custom Enterprise plan; its product page describes it as a business and custom-plan feature. Confirm the current packaging with IPinfo.

Do you use IPinfo data?

No. ip_lookup resolves against an IP graph we build ourselves every night from public registry, routing and DNS evidence. We do not resell another vendor’s IP feed.

Why does an IP from a home connection come back non_business?

Because a home ISP or mobile line names no company — the registry holder is the carrier, not the visitor’s employer. Returning the carrier as the company would be wrong, so the verdict says non_business and company is null. We do not publish a match rate, because it depends entirely on whose traffic you send.

What does an IP lookup cost?

1 credit per IP, whatever the verdict: $0.002 at the first tier after the 1,000 free monthly credits, falling with volume. ip_bulk_lookup resolves up to 100 IPs per call at the same per-IP price.

Is there an MCP server?

Yes — the same key works at /api/hub/mcp. IPinfo also runs an official MCP server for its geolocation, ASN and privacy data; the two can sit in one client.

How to migrate

  1. 1

Keep IPinfo for geolocation, carrier and fraud signals — nothing here replaces city-level location.

  2. 2

Create a Data API key and send the IPs you want attributed to GET /api/hub/v1/ip/{ip}, or POST /ip/bulk with up to 100 at a time.

  3. 3

Treat company.domain as trustworthy only when verdict is company; route non_business and low_confidence answers to your “unknown” path rather than to a company record.

  4. 4

Chain company_lookup on the returned domain for firmographics, and store graph_version with each answer so you can tell which night’s graph produced it.
