Guides and best practices for working with Lakebase Postgres on Neon: connections, pooled vs direct, schema migrations, branching, autoscaling, scale-to-zero, instant restore, read replicas, IP allow lists, logical…

Neon Postgres is neondatabase's guide for working with Lakebase Postgres on Neon. It walks the agent through a setup flow: reuse an existing DATABASE_URL or .neon file rather than creating a second project, otherwise pick an organization and project through the Neon CLI or MCP server and store the connection string in .env after reading the file first. It includes a table for choosing pooled versus direct connections (direct for migrations, pg_dump, logical replication and LISTEN/NOTIFY), driver notes, and sections on branching, migrations, a Neon-specific performance workflow, autoscaling, scale-to-zero, instant restore, read replicas, IP allow lists, logical replication and Lakebase Search for full-text, vector and hybrid search.

Use it when the work involves an existing Neon database: SQL, schema changes, inspecting performance or adding search. It deliberately hands new backends, Auth, files, Functions and LLM calls to the parent neon skill, and login and sessions to neon-auth, and it tells the agent to preserve whatever ORM and driver the project already uses.

This is mainly a skill for coding agents such as Claude Code working in a repository that talks to Neon. It is published by neondatabase under the Apache-2.0 licence and can be imported into a BusinessMCP workspace as a playbook, but its value is in the codebase rather than in business reporting.

What you can do with it

  • Choose pooled or direct Neon connection strings for a serverless app
  • Run schema migrations over a direct connection
  • Diagnose slow queries with Neon-specific performance checks
  • Add vector, full-text or hybrid search with Lakebase Search

Run it on your business data

Does it help me create a new backend or add authentication?

No. The skill routes new backends, Auth, files, Functions and LLM calls to the parent neon skill, and login and sessions to neon-auth.

How do I install Neon Postgres?

Run `npx skills add neondatabase/agent-skills --skill neon-postgres`, or import it from the BusinessMCP dashboard.
